Jesus’ self-giving love is to be the pattern of our love for others. We open up the scriptures and we first hear from the 14th Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, we hear how the early church celebrated the Rite of Ordination, with one of the Apostles laying their hands upon the head of those who we designated as the earliest leaders of the ancient church. This laying on of hands is a sacred sign of conferring, power, grace, and the Holy Spirit. As Paul and Barnabas departed for the next town, these earlier leaders were then entrusted to the Lord’s care.
In the second reading, from the 21st chapter of Revelation, were hear the timeless words, “Behold, I make all things new.” - This sacred teaching is not so much a “restoration” of stones and structures, but of people themselves. It’s noted that Archbishop Oscar Romero (after threats upon his life) would say, “I do not believe in death, but the resurrection.” He martyred Archbishop, (now Saint Oscar Romero) continued… “a bishop, a priest, a sister, [any Catholic] could die, but the Church will NEVER die. Because indeed, we are called to live for the resurrection. {Summary, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, WANTED Friends and Footwashers; p.26} Indeed in the glory of heaven, “The Lord will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” Revelation 21:4
Jesus indeed is the “gate” for His sheep. His sheep (you and I) if we listen to Him, Jesus will lead us through the “narrow gate.” This only makes sense when we wake up and examine in prayer our minds and hearts. “I give you a new commandment, love one another.” [John 13:33] Jesus’ self-giving love is to be the pattern of our love for others.
May theLord be with you.
