This weekend, the third week of Lent we turn to the “year A” sequence of readings. From this, we will read from the fourth chapter of St. John’s Gospel. As you may remember, in the fourth chapter of John’s Gospel, Jesus goes through Samaria and Galilee, and He first encounters the Samaritan woman at the well (whose name we never learn). Jesus initiates a conversation with the woman at the well, from this conversation, Jesus leads her on a journey of faith to recognize Him. From this she becomes the “evangelist” for those living in the Samaritan village. In Galilee, Jesus encounters the Gentile official who asks Jesus to heal his son.
Jesus does cure the official’s son and word spreads of the miraculous healing. These timeless accounts of Jesus’ ministry move all of us to a deeper understanding and experience of faith in Jesus.
Often our Lord Jesus sends a messenger to function as ambassador for our faith. During this half way point of our Lenten journey, it is good to ask our Lord in prayer, how am I called to be an ambassador for our faith?
READINGS FOR MARCH 20, 2022 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT FIRST SCRUTINY
1st Reading—Exodus 17: 3-7—The people grumbled against Moses because they were thirsty. Moses cried out to the Lord and asked what he should do. God told him, “Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, with your staff. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.”
Responsorial Psalm: 95: 1-2, 6-7, 8-9— “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts. If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.”
2nd Reading—Romans 5: 1-2, 5-8 —Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
Gospel Acclamation—Praise to you, Lord, Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! “Come, take the water that I give, if you drink you will never thirst again.”
Gospel—John 4: 5-42—Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near Jacob’s well. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down at the well. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said, “Give me a drink.” She said, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” She could see he was a prophet. After realizing he was the Messiah, she left her water jar and went to the town told the people.
