We hear the Gospel mystery, Jesus’ miraculous catch of fish. Our Lord in the fifth chapter of Luke’s Gospel, gives the “timeless instruction” Be Not Afraid. St. Peter, in this mysterious Gospel passage confesses “I am a sinful man.” Yet, Jesus reassures Peter with James and John. He reassures them and us living twenty centuries later. What Jesus is demonstrating is His Call and His promise. He is Calling each of us to “be bold” not according to worldly standards but according to the promise of the certainty of Jesus’ anointed word.
Brothers and Sisters – when we break open God’s Word, because it is indeed a sacred word, this can touch the fabric of each of our lives. When events from our life combine with what we hear in Sacred Scripture we are equipped in a “new way” to powerfully be a witness and a minister in the world in which we are living. And so, we are called to embrace, with the assistance and guidance of the Holy Spirit; to follow Jesus’ timeless instruction, “Be Not Afraid.” When we do this, we not only inspire ourselves but those whom we encounter to live out our life as a joyful missionary disciple of our Lord Jesus.
Anyone of us can fall into the “trap” of doubts or negative attitudes, and when we do this, we can “miss” seeing in faith the power of Jesus in our life. Yet, when we call out again to Jesus, in our thoughts, in our prayers and in our deeds, he gently again; as the Good Shepard in and through the power and working of the Holy Spirit calls us again to “Be Not Afraid.” Prayerfully reflect and consider Jesus’ Call and Promise.
May God Bless You,
Fr. Craig
