We reflect on the glorious event of the Transfiguration of Jesus on this second Sunday of Lent. As God the heavenly Father instructs those then and us today, “Listen to Him.” We are called in adoration to see how we will all be transfigured, from our earthly state to into our new state for all of eternity.
At each funeral, when Eucharistic Prayer III is prayed, we hear these words:
Remember our servant whom you have called from this world to yourself.
Grant that our sister (or brother) who was united with your Son in a death life His,
may also be one with Him in His Resurrection, when from the earth
He will raise up in the flesh those who have died,
And transform our lowly body
After the patter of His own glorious body.”
To step back for a moment, why is our Lord Jesus speaking to Moses and Elijah? Scripture scholars teach us that Moses represents the Law and Elijah the Prophets of the Old Testament; they are now testifying to Jesus. This presents to us the indication that Jesus’ life and mission are indeed the fulfillment of God’s plan. {Special consideration, “two men” also appear in the tomb (ref. Luke 24:4) and testify to the resurrection. And in the place of Jesus’ Ascension, two men in white garments testify to Jesus’ ascension. (ref. Acts 1:10) Jesus is teaching all of us that from His death, to His resurrection and ascension, “point towards” heaven.
Friends, prayer was the central act of the person of Jesus. If we accept this truth, to better understand Jesus (to better understand ourselves) it is in and through prayer. When we pray, our minds and our hearts too can be “transfigured” we will GROW in our relationship with Jesus and the church.
May God bless you,
Fr. Craig Marion
