We continue this weekend, through the beginning of Luke’s Gospel, from this we hear our ancestors in faith hear Jesus’ preaching. From this, our ancestors hear Jesus’ gracious words. Sadly, many who were listening “fall into the trap” of measuring Jesus against “flawed standards.”
Jesus in a rich and deeply authentic way stresses, “today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus is “spelling out” that the prophecy’s of the Old Testament, refer to Him and the prophecies are fulfilled in Him. That is why, the Old Testament can be rightly understood only in the light of the New Testament – as the risen Christ shows to the Apostles when he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures (ref. Luke 24:45) an understanding which the Holy Spirit begins to “perfect” on the day of Pentecost. Sacred Scripture is an everlasting treasure; it’s the living Word of God. A sister in seminary, who taught us the Introduction to Sacred Scripture, stated that sacred scripture is a “love story.” Sister was 100% correct! It’s a love story and shows how God, since the very beginning, has wanted each of us to enter into a life giving relationship.
As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin. On February 11, our parish will celebrate an evening titled, “Come, Encounter Christ.” It is a time of prayer, a time of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and a time to hear a powerful faith-sharing message. Prayerfully, consider attending, this evening will help open up to each of us, the “love story” God has written for us.
May God Bless You,
Fr. Craig
