Fr. Craig’s Contemplations 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 7-- We hear for the 32nd Sunday, that the Lord provides for Elijah’s needs as the widow of Zarephath share with him, from what she has. We then see her generosity mirrored in the story of the widow in the temple who from her poverty gives. We know, Jesus became poor for each of us, and He shared His earthly life with the poor 2,000 years ago. Pope Leo XIII in 1891, wrote a document titled “Rerum Novarum” which has significantly influenced and directed how the Catholic Church has been called to care for the poor and the marginalized. This 130-year-old document shares many important and timeless truths. Pope Leo wrote, regarding the poor and the marginalized, “no question has taken a deeper hold on the public mind…” certainly, the Holy Father was asking all of the church, how are we in our time called to care for the poor and the marginalized, not only those who are the poor living in the “western world” but all the poor throughout the entire world. This document so significant, that Pope Pius XI, in 1931, celebrated the 40th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, with a document titled, Quadragesimo anno stating where the church has made improvements and where the church needs to continue working in her care of and assistance for the poor in the world. And again, in 1991, St. Pope John Paul II, wrote Centesimus Annus, on the 100th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, after the conclusion of the cold war, where and how the church must continue to care and support the poor, the disadvantaged and the marginalized. In our local church, in the Archdiocese, our Archbishop; Archbishop Vigneron in his Pastoral Letter, Unleash the Gospel, stresses a need for Evangelical Charity. Our Archbishop challenges each of us to consider how “we are called to be of service to the poor and marginalized.” He continues, we are called, “to intensify these works of service that manifest God’s love to those around us.” At St. Anne’s, I thank God, for all that our OCEF-Food Pantry does, what Care & Share does and what Adopt- a - Family does to support the poorest of the poor in our local community. Please pray for those brothers and sisters in our parish who are engaged in these important ministries; please pray for those whom the Parish serves and please consider in your own prayers, how can I help support, OCEF, Care and Share and Adopt- a -Family so that I can help in these most important works of charity in greater Northern Oakland County. May God Bless you! Fr. Craig Marion
